Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The National Weather Service forecasts possible severe thunderstorms with high winds up to 65 mph and very heavy rain for the New York City area overnight.

City officials reminded builders, contractors, and property owners to secure their construction sites and buildings. Inspectors will be performing random spot-checks of construction sites and could issue violations and work stoppage orders.

The city warned that winds may reach higher speeds than forecast depending on the area of the city.

High wind watches and warnings are also in effect for most of New Jersey beginning Wednesday evening.

Forecasters say the strongest winds are expected between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 4 a.m. Thursday.

The winds could down trees and power lines.
