Mesa Police arrested someone who robbed a bank Tuesday morning and may be responsible for two other bank robberies recently.
About 10 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to an armed robbery at the Desert Schools Credit Union at Stapley and Brown.
"We had a white male, approximately in his 50s, that had come in and displayed a weapon, in this case a knife, and was able to leave the bank with an undisclosed amount of U.S. currency," said Mesa Police Sgt. Tony Landato.
A witness took down a description of the suspect's vehicle, and officers were able to saturate the area and locate that vehicle parked at a house nearby.
Officers secured a perimeter around the home. After about two hours, the suspect surrendered, and police were able to detain the suspect without incident.
The same man may have hit two other banks in the area, on Jan. 26 and Jan. 28. The investigation into those cases are ongoing.
Sgt. Landato is crediting the witness for being vigilant.
"We had a person that was paying attention, realized what was happening, and then was able to get a good description, pass that on to us.... would it not be for that, we may not be announcing we got him in custody, so that was a big help," said Landato.
No one was hurt at the credit union and it remained open for business.
