Hundreds attend Fayette County school board meeting on redistricting plan

Posted: Updated:
FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -

More than 800 people packed a Fayette County School Board meeting on Monday to weigh in on a redistricting and a school closing proposal.

Educators say a $15 million budget shortfall is forcing them to look at closing Fayette Middle School, Brooks Elementary, Tyrone Elementary and Fayetteville Intermediate School.

The savings from closing the schools would be an estimated $3.2 million.

Educators say the bulk of the savings would come from additional personnel cuts. The board will take a preliminary vote on tentative closings and redistricting on Feb. 11. Two public hearings will then follow.
