Kelly: Handguns the main problem on NYC streets

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says handguns are the main problem on city streets when it comes to gun violence.

Kelly, in an interview Sunday on CBS' "Face the Nation," said he supported an assault weapon ban but that in New York City the problems are handguns. He said about 60 percent of murders are committed by handguns.

The Commissioner said he was supportive of universal background checks and that about $6 million weapons were sold without one last year.

He also spoke about possible technology the NYPD is looking into that would be able to read a certain kind of energy emitted by people to detect the presence of a weapon.
