PHILADELPHIA -

Legendary Philadelphia broadcaster Sally Starr died Sunday morning at the age of 90, the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia announced.

A member of the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia confirmed the news to FOX 29.

According to the organization's website, funeral services for Starr will be private.

Starr, known for her work on TV and on the stage, was the first top-rated female DJ in the country, according to the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia.

The performer was born in Kansas City, Missouri on January 25, 1923 and was the second oldest of five girls.

Starr made her debut on the CBS radio program "Blush Creek Follies" when she was just 12-years-old. Her work eventually expanded into television, and by 1955, she entered TV as hostess of what eventually became Philadelphia's highest rated children's program "Popeye Theater," according to the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia.

Starr died just two days after turning 90.
