Bill de Blasio announces he's running for mayor

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The race for New York City mayor just got bigger with Public Advocate Bill de Blasio officially announcing he's running for office at City Hall.

Standing with his family in front of their Park Slope, Brooklyn home on Sunday, de Blasio said he plans to run a citywide campaign beginning on Monday.

"We need a mayor for our neighborhoods. Some of the recent policies show a bias away from the outer boroughs and the needs of people of every kind. There is a tale of two cities right now. We need a mayor to step up for him," de Blasio told Good Day NY.

De Blasio, 51, said Mayor Bloomberg's policies have ignored and priced out many middle-class New Yorkers.

"After nearly twelve years of Mayor Bloomberg's policies, our City isn't living up to its potential - not by a long shot. This mayor's policies have been very good for some in our city. But so many middle-class New Yorkers have been ignored and priced out. They just yearn for a city of good schools and good jobs - and a leader in City Hall who knows that we only succeed if we leave no New Yorker behind," said de Blasio.

DeBlasio says residents deserve a government that believes in its people.

He joins a field of candidates that include City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Bill Thompson, a former city comptroller, both Democrats, and Republican Joe Lhota, former chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
