Detectives are crediting DNA and the nation-wide DNA indexing system for solving a 15-year-old rape case in Smyrna.

Miguel Hernandez, 39, was arrested for sexual assaulting a 19-year-old woman at the Rose Garden Park on Teasley Drive back in March 1998. Police say Hernandez was a friend of the victim's family. The two were driving back from the store when police say Hernandez detoured to the park and sexually assaulted her.

Police were notified of a possible match when Hernandez began service a 5 year sentence at Jenkins County Correctional Center for a 2011 aggravated assault out of DeKalb County.
