DETROIT (WJBK) -- The Detroit Dog Rescue came to the aid of two poor pups Friday after they were left behind in a garage when renters moved out of a home on Whitehill on Detroit's east side.

That was three weeks ago.  Now the dogs are in dire condition -- just skin and bones.

"He's probably a day away from dying," Daniel "Hush" Carlisle said about a dog that appeared to be weak and in pain as it walked.  "I am so sick of it.  I really am.  This just makes me so mad that people just continue to just say I'm just going to leave my dog, especially in the cold.  You wouldn't leave a kid.  It's just like having a child."

These poor animals were living in filth.  Feces were everywhere.  The owner of the home just discovered the renters left the dogs and his friend contacted Detroit Dog Rescue.

"It doesn't take long for a dog to get like this if you don't feed them, and obviously she's very, very malnourished," Carlisle said about the other dog whose ribs and spine were visible.

As was said, the dogs may be a day away from dying, but DDR was almost unable to take them.

"We actually had to make room for these two because we are on overload right now.  We have some 40, maybe 50, dogs right now all over Southeastern Michigan.  People need to call rescues.  DDR is not the only dog rescue that's out here," Carlisle explained.

That is where you can help.  There are so many more dogs who need to be rescued.  Make that call.

There are a number of no kill animal shelters and rescues in our area.  Here is a list of some of them:
