Montco Strip Mall Fire Kills 1, Hurts 2 Firefighters

CHELTENHAM, Pa. -

One person is dead and two firefighters are sent to the hospital after an overnight fire at a strip mall in Montgomery County.

It was a tough night for local fire fighters as they battled the three-alarm fire at the Melrose Shopping Center in the freezing cold.

Fire crews have been working for hours to get the blaze under control.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reported from the scene that a man was in a beauty supply business around 11 p.m. Thursday night when the fire started. Firemen pulled him out, but he died, according to Cheltenham Fire Chief Rich Schuck.

The blaze spread to two the stores, one on each side. And it took some time to be brought under control because of danger that more sections of the roof might collapse.

So far, there's no word on what may have caused these stores to go up in flames.

Keeley filed this video report from the fire scene.
