Armed man causes panic inside Phoenix Kmart

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

A man armed with a gun sent people running from a Phoenix Kmart Thursday afternoon.

It was a chaotic scene outside the Kmart, located near 25th Avenue and Northern. When shoppers saw a man inside with a large gun, they ran out of the store, screaming and crying.

When officers arrived, the suspect was holed up inside the bathroom. He showed signs of being impaired by drugs.

"He wasn't trying to necessarily point it at officers, he wanted to commit suicide. A fight ensued," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Mike Lee.

Police wrestled the gun away from the man. Once they got the gun away from him, they realized it was stolen.

"The gun he had had been stolen from a vehicle earlier in the day. It was a stolen vehicle and it had a gun inside it."

The suspect was first taken to the hospital and will then be going to jail. One officer sustained minor injuries while wrestling with the suspect.
