HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- A former member of the commission that reviewed the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado is urging a similar Connecticut panel to review gun laws, as well as the intersection of mental health care and gun violence.

Former Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter said the Columbine Review Commission did not specifically address assault weapons in its report. But he said it's become an "important conversation in America" since the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown and encouraged the panel to "look at that and think about that."

Thursday marked the first meeting of Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's Sandy Hook Advisory Commission. The group is reviewing the state's laws and policies in the wake of the massacre, which left 20 first graders and six educators dead.
