Hands On Atlanta helps fix up school

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

More than 200 volunteers participated in a day of service in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Atlanta on Monday.

Hands On Atlanta, a local nonprofit organized the event at Boyd Elementary School. Atlanta City Council President Ceasar Mitchell was among those that took part.

Volunteers did landscaping, organized classrooms, and cleaned up hallways. The efforts today were done all with one thing in mind: to honor Doctor Martin Luther King Jr and what he stood for.

"Part of his underlying thrust was that we give back and that we act and that we serve our community and so today is certainly a day to celebrate and commemorate and to remember, but it's also a day for us to act and to serve our communities," Mitchell said.

Volunteers spent four hours sprucing up the elementary school.
