7 hospitalized after Wrightwood blaze, including 6 firefighters

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Six firefighters and a resident were hospitalized Monday morning from injuries suffered during a fire in the Wrightwood neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The furnace fire occurred about 11:16 a.m. in the 8100 block of South Campbell Avenue, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Sean Flynn said. The fire was extinguished and firefighters opened windows to ventilate the residence.

But when the bathroom window was opened, the fumes from the ammonia and bleach in the bathtub overtook the victims.

A Level 1 HazMat response was called after the resident and five firefighters suffered respiratory distress due to chemicals, Flynn said. A sixth firefighter injured his hip during the fire.

They were taken to Holy Cross Hospital and Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Center in Evergreen Park.
