Death of 2-year-old ruled homicide

The death of a 2-year-old South Side girl has been ruled a homicide, due to multiple injuries from a beating, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

The state Department of Children and Family Services is also investigating allegations of neglect in the death of Layla Stewart.

Layla, of the 2000 block of West 69th Place was pronounced dead at Holy Cross Hospital at 2:12 a.m. on Sunday, according to the medical examiner's office.

An autopsy on Sunday found that she died of multiple injuries from a beating, and her death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office.

DCFS is investigating allegations of neglect in relation to the child's death, according to agency spokesman Jimmie Whitelow.

The other children in the family are now in the care of other family members, he said. DCFS had has no prior contact with the girl's family, according to DCFS.
