DETROIT (myFOXDetroit.com) -

Students, teammates, and family members gathered Friday night, remembering Toron Murphy Jr.

A senior at Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Detroit, Murphy Jr. died this past Tuesday after tragically collapsing on the way into school.

The school celebrated his football legacy by holding the vigil on the 50-yard line of the football field.

His parents, Toron Murphy Sr. and Marcia, were very moved by the turnout.

"For all the people out here - he was loved, he was real loved, but I didn't know he was loved like this," says Murphy Sr. "He had a big heart."

Murphy Sr. wore his son's warm-up hoodie, jersey #68.

The MLK High band performed at the vigil. Just weeks ago, they played proudly as Murphy Jr. and his teammates won the city championship.

His mother told Fox 2, "When I pulled up and saw all these cars out here, I said 'wow.' He touched a lot of people."
