Governor Rick Snyder did not spend a lot of time talking about the City of Detroit during his State of the State address Wednesday. But Thursday, he came to Fox 2 to say what he believes city leaders are doing right in the face of a financial crisis.
"We're trying to do this as compassionately as possible but it's an emergency," says Council President Pro Tem Gary Brown.
Detroit's leaders are fighting for their city's survival struggling to keep an emergency financial manager out. Wednesday, city council approved a one year freeze of its contributions to pensions for civilian city workers which could mean a savings of $25 million dollars. That's on top of saving generated by increasing health care cost for employees and anticipated pay cuts.
"Last week was pretty good. They're making more progress this week and that's why I asked the review team to take into account the work they are doing. Keep up the good work, " says Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.
But will all their good work be enough to avoid an emergency financial manager or bankruptcy. That's a question that remains unanswered.
