Notre Dame students react to bizarre Te`o story

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On the University of Notre Dame campus, students are still trying to figure out what really happened with the Manti Te'o dead girlfriend hoax.

Some of the questions floating around campus include whether he was in anyway involved and if he did embellish the story as the football season went on to help his Heisman chances, or was Te'o, as he said in his statement Wednesday, just the victim of a sick hoax?

"Just pretty baffling," student Chris Jacques says of the issue. "You know, can't really wrap my mind around the idea of the whole hoax and who thinks of these things and who has time to execute them."

Many students did not even want to talk about the situation. But many on campus were really hoping that Te'o himself would come forward and address all the questions.

Te'o, who graduated this month and is now training for the NFL at the IMG Academy in Bradenton Florida, was expected to perhaps hold a press conference today, but now he's reportedly retained a high profile PR firm.

"He's probably spent some time doing some PR coaching today, what we hear it's probably gonna be a prepared statement, put a lot of thought into and I think it's gonna get us closer but are we ever gonna know, ultimately all the odds and ends of what's unfolded over the last year or so, probably not," says student Neal Van Vynckt.

Still, die-hard Notre Dame fans and students here want to believe that Te'o was simply duped.

Notre Dame Marketing Professor John Weber doesn't think he was involved in any way.

"No way, I give everybody the benefit of the doubt," Weber said.

But if Te'o isn't forthcoming, and soon, whatever story he does tell may still be greeted with skepticism.

"You never get the whole truth," says Weber. "You get what you believe in and half the people are gonna believe it and half the people aren't."

The question now is just how will this story play out in the days ahead, and people at Notre Dame are wondering if it might impact Te'o's NFL draft prospect.

People on the Notre Dame campus want to hear first hand from their star player and they want the truth--including why he would carry on a on line relationship with a woman for three years without ever meeting her in person.
