Kenneth Conley, one of two men who escaped from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Chicago in December, was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday on one count of escape.
As a result of the indictment, a preliminary hearing scheduled was cancelled, and Conley, 38, of Tinley Park, will be arraigned at a later date in U.S. District Court, a statement from the U.S. Attorney's office said.
Conley was charged with escaping from the MCC on Dec. 18, 2012 with his cellmate Joseph Jose Banks by scaling 17 floors down the side of the jail on a rope made of bedsheets and other material, according to the FBI.
Banks was arrested Dec. 20 on the Northwest Side, while Conley was arrested Jan. 4 in Palos Hills.
Escape carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
