Metro to sell Inauguration Day passes this weekend

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Metro says it will sell special one-day passes for Inauguration Day at nine stations on Sunday.

The transit agency is urging those who travel to Monday's inauguration to use SmarTrip debit cards rather than paper farecards, which cost more and are slower to use.

Metro is offering commemorative all-day passes for $15 with an image of President Barack Obama. Passengers can load more money onto the cards and reuse them after the inauguration.

The cards will be sold on Saturday at the Metro sales office at Metro Center in downtown Washington and at the Anacostia station. On Sunday, they will be sold at nine stations, including Union Station and eight stops in Maryland and Virginia.

Metro is projecting ridership between 600,000 and 800,000 on Inauguration Day.
