Dragon Wok owner: Don't let cold weather lead to the flu, soup it up

Updated:

This flu season is shaping up to be a bad one.  The number of cases grows daily.

If you don't plan on getting a flu shot, here are three ways to boost your chances of staying well this winter:

Oscillococcinum - a homeopathic preparation of the heart and liver of the Barbary duck. You can find it in drug stores and health food stores.  Take it at the first sign of the flu.

Elderberry - these berries are full of antioxidants and have anti-viral capabilities. It's best to take elderberry at the first sign of the flu.

Cat's Claw - helps immune systems function at their best, reducing your risk of getting sick. Take it at the first sign at the first sign of the flu.

A Gilbert Chinese restaurant has another way to fight the flu: a soup filled with ginger and other ingredients that will heal what ails you.

Here are “Dragon Sam” Stezo’s tips for making the soup base. From there you can make any soup you prefer.

Chicken Soup Base

Fill your pot or slow cooker ¾ full of water. Add 1 – 2 chicken breasts with bone in to the pot depending on the size. Add one thumb of sliced ginger. Bring to a full boil. Reduce to medium heat. With a slow cooker, this will be at the 2 or 3 heat setting. From this point cook for 2 hours. At this point the pot will be between ¾ and one half full. Remove the chicken and ginger.

This is your base.

From this point you can store the base for several days in the refrigerator. Do not freeze. It is important to remove the portion you will store first. The remaining amount can be made into any soup you like. Add the vegetables you like. Chop the cooked chicken breast and add it back in.

Once you have added your ingredients, add some more water and cook for another hour. Take note that some vegetables do not take long to cook. Add these 10 minutes before you are finished.
