BINGHAM FARMS, Mich. (WJBK) -- A local boy who proved he's brave beyond his years received a huge honor this week.

Ten-year-old Andrew Palmer was given the Heroism Award from the Boy Scouts of America Wednesday for saving his family from a fire.

Palmer, a member of Cub Scout Pack 1049 out of Bingham Farms Elementary School, woke to find his family's Southfield home in flames back in August 2011. He quickly went to work to get his mother and three siblings to safety.

"I'm really proud of what he did," said Andrew's father Lewis, who was away on business at the time of the fire.

Andrew credits his scout training for helping him to stay calm.

The Heroism Award is among the highest awards given out by the Boy Scouts of America.

Southfield Fire Chief Keith Rowley was on hand to present the prestigious award.
