INKSTER, Mich. (WJBK) -- The bullet holes are plain to see in the door jam, through a poster and in the wall of Inkster PD.  Police say the man firing used a nine millimeter handgun and was aiming at a group of people who rushed into the lobby around midnight Friday to file a police report.

"When the gunshots went off, they came scrambling, running into the police station taking cover," says Lieutenant Matt Allen.  "They came running in tripping, knocking over the garbage can."

Police say someone easily could have been killed.  So what led up to this?

At first, the group said it was road rage, but police have since learned there's another story.

Sources tell Fox 2 the dispute originated in a neighborhood near Lehigh and Sylvia in Inkster when someone stole a puppy from the man who ended up firing the shots.  The puppy was given to a drug dealer as payment for drugs and the man wanted it back.

Police would not identify the gunman or the five young men and women involved.

Following the shooting, the suspect drove off, but police quickly spotted him near Middlebelt and Cherry Hill.

"Garden City Police Department located the suspect vehicle, began to follow it.  Before they were able to engage the vehicle, the vehicle came to a rolling stop in the middle of one of their streets," says Allen.

When officers approached, they say the man was dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.  State police are still investigating his death and why he put so many people, including police officers, in danger.

Thankfully no one was hurt when those bullets started flying.
