PHOENIX -

A woman was badly hurt in a motorcycle crash caused by a hit-and-run driver Friday morning.

Officers say she was traveling on 19th Avenue near Northern when an SUV turned left in front of her about 10:15 a.m.

The woman's motorcycle collided with the SUV. The SUV did not stop, but instead fled the scene.

Paramedics took the woman to the hospital in extremely critical condition.

"It's just sad. I know people don't watch for motorcycles, scooters and they need to pay more attention. It's sad somebody could lose their life because of somebody being careless," says witness Lanae Soucy.

Police arrested the SUV driver a few blocks away. Someone had called police to report a person acting suspiciously, and responding officers realized it was the hit-and-run suspect.

29-year-old James Edward Bellinger was booked into jail on charges of aggravated DUI, aggravated assault, and hit-and-run.

Police say Bellinger showed signs of drug use.

The 37-year-old female is not expected to survive. Her name is not yet available.
