Crews in Mesa performed an unusual type of canal rescue on Thursday. A horse had to be rescued from a Mesa canal after it slipped in while still attached to its buggy.
About 3 p.m., Mesa firefighters responded to the canal at Greenfield and McKellips to assist a man and his horse.
Mesa Fire spokesman Forrest Smith says the horse and its owner apparently veered too close to the edge of the canal and slipped in. The horse may have been trying to keep its distance from a car parked alongside the canal.
Crews separated the horse from the carriage and walked it through calm water to an area where the horse could be walked up and out of the canal.
