Doctor: Flu epidemic highlights need for vaccine

Posted: Updated:

Widespread flu cases are putting health officials across the country into a territory they haven't seen in a long time, and FOX 9 News spoke with Dr. Nicholas Kelley about what can be done to stop the spread.

Watch the video for more information.

Kelley is a researcher at the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, and he said the volume of cases in Minnesota -- and across the nation -- warrant the term "epidemic."

On Wednesday morning, the mayor of Boston declared a public health emergency due to how quickly the flu has swept through the city. Health care centers there are offering free vaccines to anyone who has not yet been immunized.

Locally, most hospitals have been keeping a close eye on visitors. Many have also instated restrictions on anyone who is coughing, sneezing or feverish.
