SRP board approves $1 million donation to Super Bowl

PHOENIX -

SRP's Board of Directors has voted to give $1 million to the 2015 Super Bowl Host Committee.

The utility company will now be an official sponsor of the game.

Some of the money will be used to provide solar energy for the game, and part of the donation is an "in-kind" contribution.

SRP will provide services in exchange for advertising at the event.

There was some opposition. Some don't feel the utility has any business sponsoring anything that might pass the cost along to the customer.

In November, the utility raised rates on average by about $6 a month.

SRP was also a sponsor in the 2008 and 1996 Super Bowl games.
