Tucson man gets life prison term for park murder

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Tucson man has been sentenced to life in prison plus 14 years for raping and killing a woman at a city park in 2010.

Pima County prosecutors say 29-year-old Frank Romero was sentenced Monday.

He was convicted in November of first-degree murder and two counts of sexual assault.

Authorities say Sandra Stevens' nude body was found in Freedom Park on June 10, 2010.

Responding police officers reported seeing Romero 180 yards away from Stevens' body, washing his hands in a water fountain.

Tests showed Stevens' blood was on Romero's shoes and his DNA was found inside her body.

The Arizona Daily Star says an autopsy showed the 46-year-old Stevens died after being beaten and asphyxiated and had injuries consistent with sodomy and rape.
