Four members of Rockford family die in early morning house fire

Posted: Updated:

Four members of a Rockford family were killed early Monday when a house fire engulfed so much of their home that firefighters were prevented from attempting a rescue, fire officials said.

Members of three generations of the family were killed during the blaze, which was first reported about 12:30 a.m., according to a release from the Rockford Fire Department.

Sharon Cashatt, 61, two of here sons -- Douglas, 21, and 13-year-old Dominick -- and her 10-month-old granddaughter, Isabella Gonzalez, likely died from smoke inhalation, authorities say.

The family was trapped on the upstairs floor of the home, according to the release.

Isabella's mother and father both escaped the blaze in the 1600 block of 10th Avenue in Rockford, the fire department said.

Preliminary finding of an investigation indicate the fire erupted in a front room of the home and appears to be accidental, fire officials say.

Fire investigators were not able to determine if smoke detectors in the home were working properly.

The official causes of death will be made pending the result of autopsies on Tuesday.
