Camden Police Officers Receive Layoff Notices

Posted: Updated:
CAMDEN, N.J. -

The City of Camden moved another step closer to a county-run police force Monday as the city's police officers began to receive their layoff notices.

The layoffs are scheduled to take effect on April 30.

The countywide plan calls for all 270 police officers to be laid off. Many of the current officers could end up on the new countywide force, which is expected to have 400 officers.

The current city police officers will have to apply for positions on the county force by January 15.

Supporters of the plan say the county-run force will be more cost effective and believe the added officers will help to better police the city and Camden County

Critics, however, say it's a union blasting move that puts the public at risk.
