Northern barrier island residents start to return

Posted: Updated:

TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) - Authorities are reopening most of Ocean County's northern barrier islands more than two months after Superstorm Sandy destroyed and damaged homes.

Toms River Mayor Thomas Kelaher says the state of emergency has been lifted Monday for the barrier island sections of his town, Brick Township, Lavallette and Seaside Heights.

There will still be a large police presence. But residents and visitors will be permitted to drive along Route 35.

The Ortley Beach section remains closed as crews work to restore utilities and repair road damage.
