Two suspects have been arrested in an attempted robbery in Phoenix that left a man and woman with gunshot wounds.

Phoenix police say 24-year-old Dwayne Phelps was taken into custody Thursday on suspicion of attempted armed robbery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. 21-year-old Jasmine Shanead Greer is being held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

Police say 32-year-old Jerold Garrison was riding his bike April 18 when he saw someone trying to rob a woman.

Garrison was shot in the neck as he tried to help the 21-year-old woman, who suffered a minor gunshot wound during the attack.

"We never ever encourage our citizens to step into situations like that and then themselves become victims, but in the same breath none of us really know what we're going to do in that type of a situation, and Mr. Garrison saw that there was someone in distress and felt he had to do something to stop that," said Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes.

Police say Greer offered to sell the woman a vehicle and made arrangements to meet the victim. Police also say Phelps is related to Greer.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
