Doc with permit charged with gun at Pa. school

Posted: Updated:

CONFLUENCE, Pa. (AP) — A well-known doctor with a permit to carry a concealed weapon has been charged with having a gun on school property when he picked up a child at a southwestern Pennsylvania high school about three hours after the school shootings last month in Newtown, Conn.

State police say they've charged 41-year-old chiropractor Charles King II because the state school code prohibits weapons on school property in most instances. Police waited nearly three weeks to file the charges because they're not sure whether the carry permit is an exception, though Somerset County District Attorney Lisa Lazzari-Strasiser doesn't believe it is.

King didn't immediately return a call for comment Thursday.

Police say King wasn't disorderly, threatening or trying to prove a point. He merely had the gun with him when Turkeyfoot Valley Area school employee noticed it.
