Hurricane Sandy Victims Angry At Delay in Federal Funding

At the north end of Atlantic City, the cleanup from Hurricane Sandy still has a long way to go. Tons of debris from the Boardwalk is still piled high and demolition crews are still scooping up what Sandy left in her wake. News that the House failed to act on a $60 billion aid package angered storm victims.

"They're playing games with us," said one resident.

"I think it's really disgraceful that they did that," said another.

Barry Barnes has been out of his inlet front home for over two months now. His patience is running low with lawmakers in Washington.

"We're out of our place, we had to rent another place, we're trying to save this place if we can," Barnes told FOX 29. "There's people in New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut that are suffering while this is all going on."

Up the block, John Susavage says he just got the heat back on in the home he's lived in here for eight years. He wants some answers from congressmen.

"My thoughts, it's a joke," he said, "It really is. Come on. Push this stuff through, stop dragging, get the money out," he added.

This was the hardest hit area of Atlantic City. Cars are still stranded in the sand. Sections of the bulkhead are missing and people's personal belongings are still scattered everywhere. Most say the cleanup and rebuilding needs to get fast tracked. Any delay getting federal money into the pipeline means further suffering for storm victims.

"People are suffering and we need help," Barnes said "They should pass the $60 billion aid package and get it done."

"A lot of these guys are not getting voted back in. I guarantee you that," said James Clegg.

Gov. Chris Christie says the flood insurance program in New Jersey could be broke by next week if the funding package doesn't get done.

Contractors say the sooner the money gets distributed, the faster they can complete the cleanup and start rebuilding.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is holding its monthly board meeting, two days after it heard from a panel on what it needs to do to improve its accountability and efficiency and restore public trust.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey could rescind a $1-a-year lease for a park-and-ride lot near the Lincoln Tunnel. The agency's chief of real estate and development told a committee Wednesday that it should change a deal made in 2012. Published reports have alleged that former Port Authority chairman David Samson voted to approve the lease even though his law firm did business with New Jersey Transit, which operates the park-and-ride lot.
