SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

Some chose to start 2013 off in a healthy way by hitting the valley streets for a 5K run.

The race began at the Scottsdale Civic Center. The Commitment Day Run took place simultaneously in 25 cities across the nation in support of healthier living.

Thousands joined in on the movement, coming at a time when our nation's obesity rate is rising and the next generation of children is facing serious health concerns.

"I'm ready for the rest of the year, staying healthy, keep going and see how many more 5ks I can do this year," said one runner.

"I just had fun coming out and running you know, and being with my family and friends."

"My commitment is I'm going to enter a body building competition and hopefully place."

The overall goal of commitment day is encourage a healthier way of life while inspiring others to do the same.
