Water main break leaves neighborhood without water for hours

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

A water main broke in northwest Phoenix Tuesday, leaving parts of a neighborhood without running water for several hours.

It happened at 35th Avenue and Cactus, and our recent cold weather may be to blame.

Cold weather can damage water mains, especially older metal ones.

Tuesday morning's break affected a few homes, some businesses, and came on a day everyone's supposed to be taking it easy.

Probably not what these City of Phoenix Water Department repair workers wanted to be doing on New Year's Day -- pumping out water and digging out around a broken water main.

They have to remove the section that failed and put in a new one.

The water outage in the neighborhood hit Rocket Burger and Subs just as they were getting ready for the lunch crowd.

"Drove into work and saw construction and was informed at the door we will have a problem," said Steve Nash of Rocket Burger and Subs.

There are plenty of liquids at the Rocket: a huge selection of sodas of every conceivable kind, but without running water, there's no way to cook.

"No this is not what we were envisioning, hopefully they will get it done quick," says Nash.

Meanwhile, back at the water main break, workers sawed off and removed the broken pipe and lowered a new one into the hole they'd dug in the street.

They got the water running again, allowing Rocket Burger to start making food.

"We have Chicago-style stuff, a lot of other things we try to do unique burgers and things like that."
