SUV crashes into building, hits gas main

PHOENIX -

People living at a Phoenix apartment complex were evacuated Monday after a driver crashed into the building and hit a gas main.

Officers say a woman driving near 20th Street and Portland collided with 3 parked cars, then slammed into the apartment building.

Her SUV severed a gas main, causing a leak. Paramedics took the woman to the hospital to be checked out.

"We're not sure if this is a situation where the driver is impaired or possibly had a medical condition of some sort, so we do have officers at the hospital following up with her," said Phoenix Police Lt. Steve Haynes.

Crews from Southwest Gas showed up to fix the gas leak. The evacuated tenants were then allowed to return to their units.
