Dozens protest police shooting of Macon man

Posted: Updated:
MACON, Ga. -

The police-involved shooting of an unarmed man drew dozens of protesters to Rosa Parks Square in Macon.

The Telegraph of Macon reports protesters - including former Macon Mayor C. Jack Ellis - rallied in the square across from City Hall Friday afternoon to protest the Dec. 21 shooting of Sammie Davis Jr.

Authorities say Davis was in a confrontation with a police officer that ended when he was shot three times in his chest.

The newspaper reports police initially said the officer who shot Davis was trying to serve him with a warrant, and later said Davis had no warrants and the officer was responding to a call for service.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave and the shooting is under investigation.

New Yorkers that have visited City Island in the summer know it gets really busy, especially on Memorial Day weekend. Saturday, it was pretty much a ghost town thanks to the cold, rainy weather.
