Psychiatrist's suggestions for keeping New Year's resolutions

DETROIT (WJBK) -- Whether you're just plodding along or gliding into the New Year, metro Detroiters of all ages are making big plans for 2013.  Some are making New Year's resolutions.

"To stop procrastinating a little bit too much," one person said.

"My New Year's resolution is to stop smoking cigarettes," said another.

According to the people who keep track of these things, the top five resolutions are lose weight, get organized, spend less and save more money, enjoy life and get fit.

However, experts say the vast majority of resolutions don't stand a chance.

It turns out bad habits are hard to break.  Farmington Hills psychologist Dr. Toni Kaplan said it takes motivation, but "it's never just will power that helps people succeed.  You really have to have a plan."

She said you also have to be disgusted with a bad habit to make a change.  She tells people to set new goals and set up a support system.

"So having a plan, persisting, persevering are really, really important."

Or you could just skate by without making a resolution and keep doing your best year after year.

    Hundreds of oak barrels of wine are all stacked in one room. You might think this is Napa, California. But it's not. It's the Brooklyn Winery, located in what was once an old pickle factory in Williamsburg.     Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled a sweeping report Thursday that examined New York City's recovery progress from Superstorm Sandy and promised to reform a much-maligned program that was supposed to rebuild wrecked homes. Speaking to about 50 homeowners, officials and community leaders in a storm-battered Staten Island neighborhood, the mayor said the city is aiming to start rebuilding an ambitious 500 homes through its federally funded Build-It-Back program.
