PETA wins case to halt NC possum drop

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The annual New Year's Eve Possum Drop will be held as usual on Monday night in Tallapoosa, Georgia. After all, the possum involved is of the stuffed variety.

That wasn't the case in Brasstown, North Carolina. For the past 19 years, a live possum has been lowered from a pole at midnight. The animal is lowered in a see-through box draped with tinsel.

In 2012, PETA went to court to try to stop the event, calling it cruel and illegal, and won.

Town officials say the party will go on, and they are considering putting a stuffed possum in the cage this year instead.

Do you agree with PETA or should the event go on, even with a stuffed possum? Let us know! Post your comments on our FOX 5 Atlanta Facebook page, or tweet us @GoodDayAtlanta.
