NEW YORK (AP) -

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a cleanup plan for a New York City canal that will cost up to $504 million.

The plan for the Gowanus Canal includes dredging contaminated sediment, and stabilizing other areas too contaminated to dredge. It will include controls to prevent raw sewage from flowing into the water.

The canal runs 1.5 miles through a narrow industrial zone near some of Brooklyn's wealthiest neighborhoods. It was named a Superfund site in 2010, meaning the government can force polluters to pay for its restoration.  The cost could be as little as $467 million.

The EPA will accept public comments on the proposal until March 28, and will hold public meetings on Jan. 23 and Jan. 24 in Brooklyn.
