New Year's Eve may be a time of revelry, but drivers should take heed that it's also the deadliest day of the year for alcohol-related fatalities on the roads.
So the American Automobile Association reminds those who will be on the roads not to drink and drive, not to ride with anyone who's been drinking, and to watch for impaired drivers on New Year'.
For New Year's Eve partiers, AAA recommends:
• Plan ahead to designate a non-drinking driver before any party or celebration begins.
• Never get behind the wheel when you've been drinking alcohol — even if it's just one drink.
• Never ride as a passenger in a car driven by someone who's been drinking.
• Do not hesitate to take the keys from friends or family members who may be impaired.
• Call a taxi for a friend in need.
• Be a responsible host in reminding guests to stay safe and always offer alcohol-free beverages.
• If you encounter an impaired driver on the road, keep a safe distance and ask a passenger to call 911.
The AAA also announced its support of ignition interlock devices for all convicted DUI offenders. According to a release, research has identified IIDs as a proven way to save lives and recommends requiring their for all convicted offenders because they are more effective at keeping impaired drivers off the road.
A recent National Transportation Safety Board decision to support laws requiring IID use for all first-time DUI offenders was one of several new recommendations to help curb alcohol-related injuries and deaths.
