(WJBK) -- In school, students learn the three R's of education: Reading, writing, and arithmetic. But, what happens when environmental awareness enters the classroom?
Many schools are now teaching three more R's: Reduce, reuse, recycle! We'll show you how local students are going green and making the grade! What young people are doing from kindergarten through college to protect our planet.
It's the: Kids "FOXe Kids Edition!"
SEGMENT 1: REDUCE A Novi student launches a successful anti-idling campaign and lawmakers are taking notice, Detroit students are showing various ways they are reducing energy consumption at schools, Gina Levy from "Peace, Love, Planet" invites us into her kitchen for a demo. She teaches students how to change their behaviors to reduce waste at home.
SEGMENT 2: REUSE See how students are reusing discarded items and use their imagination, "Arts & Scraps" of Detroit travels to schools to teach kids about reusing, also travel to New Haven where students reuse pizza boxes to make solar ovens. We also travel to New Haven High school where they are reusing vegetable oil to make bio fuel. We also return to Gina Levy's kitchen where she shows us how pack waste-free lunches.
SEGMENT 3: RECYCLE Various way schools and students across metro Detroit are recycling. Many have "green teams" to recycle at school. We feature efforts in Rochester, Farmington Hills, Ferndale, and at UD Mercy.
SEGMENT 4: OTHER WAYS STUDENTS ARE GOING GREEN We visit a special greenhouse at Clintondale Middle School in Clinton Township, and one that just re-opened in Southfield, (back to New Haven for more on their alternative energy curriculum and then bee green living science program).
