Residents have friendly Christmas lights competition

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

One Brooklyn neighborhood is so bright it's looking more like daytime than nighttime because of the over-the-top Christmas decorations lighting up the street.

The displays are so popular they're attracting tourists from around the world.

It may not be a white Christmas in New York City, but it's certainly a bright one in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn.

Welcome to the annual lights celebration along 12th Avenue.

Michael Mazza has been decking out his property for 12 years, something he says he does for the children.

"For pleasure and gratification, for the kids – I see a lot of kids enjoying this," said Mazza.

And just about every block has something –- whether it's the toy soldier statues, twinkling trees even a carousel. Most property owners hire a company to set the decorations up and around Thanksgiving, and then break them down after New Year's.

There's even a little friendly competition involved.

"Does it get competitive? Life is competitive. Can you blow this out anymore? Yeah, who know," said Mazza.

"I don't know if you can blow it out anymore. One thing that's clear, this attracts people from not only all over New York City but also the world."

Fox 5 spoke with two couples who are from Germany. They say they heard about the Dyker Heights holiday lights on the internet.

"We never saw this before, never," said one impressed tourist.
