NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A Long Island man faces assault charges after police say he tried to run over his ex-girlfriend in an apparent jealous rage.

It happened just after 11 p.m. on Monday night.

Police say that Oscar A. Santos, 33, of Hempstead, was driving on Midland Street when he passed his 19-year-old ex-girlfriend.  She was walking down the street with a 31-year-old man.

Police say that Santos backed up and drove his car at the victims.  He hit them in the front lawn of one of the homes.  Police say that Santos got out and started kicking the man in the head and body.

Santos then got back into the car, according to police, and parked the car on the street before running away.  He was arrested when he returned for the car.

The victims were taken to a hospital.  The woman was being treated for a broken right ankle and the man was being treated for sprained knees.

Santos was to be arraigned on Tuesday, December 25, 2012 in Hempstead. It was unclear if he had a lawyer.
