For some people in need, the best Christmas gift is a free appointment with a dentist and an office in Mesa makes that dream come true.
Long before Comfort Dental opened its doors, people were lined up outside of the clinic near Country Club Drive and Southern Avenue.
Many like Nakitta Walker camped out on the cold cement sidewalk.
"We got here about 12 midnight and the line was around the building..we camped out in the van," she said.
Like everyone in line, they have no dental insurance and have no place to go for care. The dentists here decided to offer a free clinic day.
"Back in 1984, we had a lot of people that had an unmet need..we thought it would be a great thing to do at the same time," said Dr. Neil Norton.
Almost 30 years later, the free clinic is still open every Christmas Eve.
Walker says, "I don't have dental insurance. I am so grateful for it."
The dentists volunteer their time. They take care of everything from simple cleanings to extractions.
And as everyone leaves the dental office, they get a free toothbrush to remind them to brush every day and making a lot of people feel better this Christmas Eve.
