Firefighters play 'Santa' for family in need

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

A mother and six children lose everything in a raging house fire. They've been struggling since March with no place to live. But, firefighters made sure the family has a Merry Christmas.

It felt like Christmas at one Detroit firehouse on Sunday. Corin Lopez and her six children were there, all smiles, after receiving new coats, clothes and toys.

Detroit firefighters with engine company 53 and ladder 25 made it all possible. They took time out to cook up a holiday meal fit for a king. They also pitched in, collecting nearly $1000 for gifts.

Back in March, a kitchen fire forced the family out of their home. With no place to live, they slept in a minivan. With the help of Fox 2 viewers, the family is getting back on their feet.

"It lets me know people out there still care," Lopez told us. "It lets me know anything can happen, any positive thing."
