2 injured, 1 critically hurt at a senior high-rise building

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Two elderly people were injured, one critically. during a fire Sunday in a high-rise building for senior citizens in the South Side Kenwood neighborhood.

A still and box alarm and an EMS Plan 1 was called about 10 a.m. for the fire at 4949 S. Cottage Grove Ave., according to Fire Media Affairs.

The fire occurred in an apartment on the eighth floor of the building, Fire Media Affairs said.

A 85-year-old suffered burns to 25 percent of the body and was taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Fire Media Affairs said. A 67-year-old was taken in serious condition to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

There were working smoke detectors in the building, according to Fire Media Affairs.

The fire was extinguished about 10:20 a.m.

An EMS Plan 1 brings at least five ambulances to the scene.
