Final funerals held for Sandy Hook victims

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The final funerals for the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting were held on Saturday. It marks the end of a very difficult week of services for the community.

Friends and family were asked to wear the color purple at Josephine Gay's funeral --- the little girl's favorite color. She had just turned 7-years-old this month.

Her parents say she was autistic and though she could not speak, she touched the lives of so many around her-- with hugs and her sense of humor.

Also buried today, 6-year-old Ana Grace Marquez-Green was also buried Saturday. The little girl from a family of jazz musicians, loved to dance and sing.

An image that everyone has seen is the one with her brother singing at the piano.

The family of Emilie Parker is also saying goodbye. Thousands of pink ribbons were tied to fences, trees and signs in the 6-year-olds native town of Ogden, Utah.

The Parkers moved from Ogden to Newtown less than a year ago. Through all the grief, her family is trying to find strength from the community.

"All of us have a son or a daughter or a nephew or a cousin or somebody that is really, really close to us. All of us feel connected to children and those who help children," said Robbert Parker, father of Emilie.

A sentiment shared by volunteers of Operation Kids Comfort.

Many in this group of volunteers from Breezy Point, Queens are still dealing with damage from SuperStorm Sandy. They spent this Saturday delivering brand new teddy bears and stuffed animals in Newtown, trying to brighten the day for families.

"We are just trying to pay it forward," said one volunteer.

After the funerals today, Governor Dannel Malloy is ordering flags back to full staff. They had been lowered since the shooting to honor the 20 children and six adults who were killed at the school.
