NYPD officer charged in old Fla. sex case

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) - A veteran New York police officer has been charged in Florida with sexual battery based on alleged assaults that took place 24 years ago.

The Osceola County Sheriff's Office reported Friday that NYPD Sgt. Eduardo Nieves has been charged with six counts of sexual battery. Nieves has been with NYPD for 18 years and works at the Manhattan Detention Center.

Authorities said the charges are based on allegations from a male relative who was eight years old when the assaults allegedly occurred between March and June 1988. The allegations were reported to Osceola County investigators in October.

Nieves is jailed in New York awaiting extradition to Florida. It was not clear Friday whether he has hired a lawyer.
