NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

An effort to help the families of the Newtown, Conn. shooting victims started with a simple meal delivery to grieving parents and has grown to include donations from around the world.

Community members including Debra Accomando of MySandyHookFamilyFund.com are responding to the immediate needs of the family members.

From funeral clothing to an order of 500 candles for a vigil ceremony, Accomando says volunteers are answering the call.

The grassroots organization is also hoping to raise $100K for each family of the 26 victims.

"We're the members of the community who are going to be here for the long haul. We are a ground force. We are handling as many immediate needs as we can, Accomando told Good Day New York on Friday.
